Contributors to Eroding Support

Support structures at small/mid-sized funds have not kept pace with the complexity of investment managers role.

Reasons for Eroding Support

Pressure on management fees has reduced the ability to pay for quality execution and risk management support.

There is a shortage of traders qualified to trade complex portfolios, the increased costs of recruiting and retaining experienced talent has resulted in fewer professionals with multi-product expertise.

We see eroding support from investment banks as they focus on lending, proprietary trading and electronic trading platforms. There is a trend towards less research and individual attention to investment manager issues with younger, less experienced individuals serving clients.

There is a high cost for risk managers capable of overseeing complex portfolios. Based on our observations, the costs of a qualified risk manager, if available,  would be in the range of $1MM + per year.
